unstoppable Explorer window in NT 4.0

By MDOT_TECH ·
Got a real head scratcher here....
Dell 866Mhz, Windows NT 4.0 SP6, newly imaged system. After user log in he is presented with an explorer window pointing to C:\programs.

We cannot figure out where this is being called from and while not harmful to the system it IS annoying to the user.

We have used sysedit to look in the autoexec.bat, win.ini, system.ini, config.sys, and ntlocal.cmd. We've also checked the startup folders. We have also scanned various parts of the registry looking for what might be calling this window without any success.

I even used a utility I found on the MS Knowledgebase called AUTORUNS.EXE that show everything being called upon login and still nothing!!!!!

Does anyone have any suggestions for someplace else we can look to make this window stop popping up. I can always re-image the system, but to me thats like burning down your house to kill a fly!
Any help would be appreciated

Does the windows pop up if another user logs in? If not, then you may be able to get rid of the windows by deleting the user's profile from the system and logging back in as that user. If it pops up for any user, it may be comeing from the default user profile and it may need to be deleted..Just a thought

Thought of that......no go...its coming up on all profiles and we looked in all of them including the default users profile. Thanks for trying !

It's something being called from either the start menu or the run services and it's something residing in c:\program files

I would suspect it's something like findfast or the office shortcut bar, ni which case I'd create new shortcuts and drop them back to where they were being called.

Good luck to you

Checked all that.......no .EXE's .COM's or .BAT's in the c:\program dir. We found an article on the MS Knowledge base that says there's a known bug in NT that places a null entry in the run services section of the registry. This generates pop up windows like the one we're getting. Unfotunately there were no "Null" entries in his registry to delete so the problem is stilll there. Thanks for answering

You're right - it's not in the USER keys. It'll be in the SYSTEM or SOFTWARE hives. "Null" may not say "Null" - it may only be a set of quote marks ("")
Try looking in:
HKLMSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun or RunOnce(Ex) or RunServicesfor an entry that may only say "C:\Programs"
If you don't find anything there, run REGEDIT (not REGEDT32) and use it's search function (REGEDT32 doesn't search VALUES - only keys) and search for that string.

Good Luck!
