Update and Upgrade ?

By leer154 ·
This computer that I'm presently trying to update and upgrade is not allowing me to. Initially I was asked to upgrade this compaq from ME to XP. Constantly stalls while gathering information. With sever sessions with tech support the suggested doing a complete format and install of XP. But I found some incompatable hardware possibly. So I decided against. Next I decided to just update ME with Critical updates but again the system stalls. Then I tried to upgrade from IE 5.5 to 6.0 and again system fails to update. Can someone please help?

You cover a lot of ground, but leave the rest of us in the dark.

What type of computer - bios level, CPU, HDD, installed RAM? There are some basic tests to run that will validate most of the hardware, assuming it meets minimum system requirements to begin with.

Next is the stall - any error indications besides that? Any error indications before trying to either upgrade or update? Any of the sytem logs being monitored?

The expertise here can probably walk you through to either a solution or a confirmed hardware issue, but we need a better starting point.

You may want to withdraw this question and start fresh with the basic facts included. :-)

I can think of a number of things that could cause all problems:

Insufficient RAM and / or memory leaks.

Virus or spy-ware infections.

Old slow video card. For XP, you really need a decent card with at least 16MB of RAM.

I FULLY agree with the full format and clean installation of XP, or Me.
Back up ALL critical files first.
And, replace any out of date hardware.
