Update NAV Corp. Edition virus defs.

By mln ·
We are running Symantec Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition 7.6 on a NT 4.0 Server for our enterprise real-time virus protection. I would like to schedule LiveUpdate to check for new virus definitions more than once a day. Has anyone ever successfully used the Task Scheduler in NT to do this? And if so, can you please give me some direction?
Thanks.

We're using NAV 7.5 but use the File --> Schedule Updates to go out daily and check for new virus definitions. Not using the NT Scheduler.

We have also programmed SMS to check and distribute the new defs to client computers.

Why do you wantto use NT Scheduler to do this? NAV is pretty much geared toward this automatically (at least version 7.5 is)... just NOT "twice" a day. But you could schedule for one time daily on one server and a second time again on another.

I don't think Norton even comes out with updates but once daily. Use the Live update settings in 7.6 to configure daily updates. Also the other guy uses SMS to distribute updates, why not just set the machines up as Managed and have them get the defs from the AV server. That worked for us in 7.5 and now 7.6. That way you only have on def running around, the one on the server and the PC's use that one when they start.

Th following link will take you to a page describing all aspects of Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition 7.6. It states thay Symantec suggests that your definitions be updated daily. It also provides instructions on how to schedule that daily update, but I suppose you already know that.

As far as using NT 4.0 scheduler to run the update more than once a day, I've never seen reference to that. I surmise it can't be done, since settings need to be applied within Norton software, and scheduler could do no more than simply launch the software.

Good luck,

I just had a thought as to how this could be done. Since you could manually run live update any time you wanted - even a dozen times a day if desired - all you need to do is execute the specific program (the executable file) that launches liveupdate.

That file is "Navlu32.exe".

Simply write a batch file that executes Navlu32.exe. The only thing you'll have to add to the batch file is an "enter" to accept the default "next" in the live update program - A simple two line batch file.

Then you could use NT scheduler to run that batch file.

I tried it and it works!

We have the same setup. I like running the Live Update automatically 3 times a day. To do it you'll have to use AT commands and the scheduler. If you go to Symantec's knowledge base and look up this article 2001110711084148 it explains how to do it. Here's the link http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/enterprise/products/nav/nav_76_ce/search.html

Hope this helps.

I found that same article, but I'm not sure how to use the AT command with the scheduler. Are you willing to pass on the instructions on how to do so?
