Upgrade 2000 Domain Controller to 2003

By jmiller ·
I have a mixed domain in a single forest. I have added 2 Windows 2003 Servers as domain controllers to a domain that originally had 2 Windows 2000 servers as domain controllers.

I have retired one of the 2000 server domain controllers and now want to upgrade the last 2000 server domain controller to 2003.

This remaining 2000 server domain controller has all FSMO roles.

Wouldn't the easiest upgrade path be to transfer the FSMO roles to one of the 2003 server domain coontrollers and then upgrade the 2000 server?

As a matter of fact, Yes.

Make sure that the 2003 box that you are tansferring to is a Global Catalog, transfer all 5 roles, and give it about 30 minutes to make sure you don't have any wierd replication problems.

If all is still stable and you see no other strange AD behavior, upgrade that last server.

Not a big deal.

Best of luck.
