You shouldn't have to. As long as the MOBO works with the new CPU you should be in good shape. You may need to install new drivers for the CPU or the MOBO in windows, look at your documentation and your manufacturer's website for details about that.

Was this just a CPU change?
Or, did you change motherboards?

If you did change motherboards, Microsoft recommends a clean install for W2K and XP systems!

The knowledge base article has come up missing since they changed their naming protocol.
If you would like, I can e-mail a copy to you.

If this was just a CPU upgrade, make sure that ALL the CPU and Memory clock speeds are set correctly.
For the Duron CPU, your FSB was 100MHz, or 200MHz.
RAM clock may have been either FSB (100MHz), or FSB + PCI (133MHz) for SDRAM.
Or FSB for DDR.

Your new Athlon XP CPU, needs a FSB of 133MHz, or 266MHz, along with the appropriate multiplier to get to the actual clock speed ~1800MHz.
RAM speed may need to be adjusted.

You may have RAM that does not perform properly at the higher FSB speed of the new CPU.

When you flashed the BIOS, did you reset the CMOS memory?
Often when you flash the BIOS, the storage location or word format for some BIOS settings change. Resetting the CMOS clears away any bits from the old BIOS settings.
