upgrade DNS from NT 4 to Windows 2000

By HuckleberryHound ·
I need to upgrade my NT 4 DNS server to Windows 2000 but I don't want to do an in-place upgrade. Is it possible to "export" my DNS database to a file then "import" into Windows 2000 so that I won't have to re-create it from scratch?

Hello greg_brown:

It sure is. There is a switch labelled "Boot from file" for the named.boot file. For the exact procedure search your Win2K help file for:

DNS, files, related

Zone file are located in: root\winnt\system32\dns and the namingconvention is zone_name.dns.

You will probably still have to do a little file renaming and such but it is a lot easier than re-building all your zone files.
