Upgrade from NT 4.0

By alinehyder ·
I would like to know if when I upgrade my PDC to 2000, will all the workstations and member servers be still part of the new domain, or will I have to go to each one and join them to new domain, doesn't sound like it would work like that, but I justwant to be sure that nothing will stop working, or the users will kill me.

When upgrading all existing machines, will retain membership. You will not have to touch the machines.

I was at an MCP conference in september. Microsoft presented a method to upgrade from NT 4.0
They told us to setup an NT Backup Domain Controller. Then upgrade it to w2k. Once all is working fine then and only then make your back up controller yourprimary domain controller. I am assuming the Domain will remain the same. Your users should not be affect if you do it this way.
I would not attempt to upgrade an existing PDC to w2k without using Microsoft method.
Good luck.
Try to reaching Microsoft about their reccomended way of doing this.
