Upgrade from Windows ME to Windows XP

By roseeone ·
I have a dell dimension 4150 that I want to do a clean install on. What is the best way to do this. My first try didn't clean everything off the hard drive.

There is an option on the Windows XP disk to choose to do a clean install, this is available with the full version and not the upgrade version.

Using a Windows ME startup disk insert in the floppy drive and boot computer,at the command prompt typein fdisk, once this screen appears follow the onscreen instructions, you will lose all data so be sure that you have all drivers to support for Win XP,before performing the task

Make sure that ALL critical data and settings are backed up before proceeding.

If you are using an upgrade version of XP, make sure that you have an actual Me CD, and not just a restore CD.

If you have a full or OEM version, you do not need the Me CD.

Boot from a Me startup floppy.

Run fdisk from the DOS prompt.

Follow the prompts, and delete at least the primary DOS partition.

Exit fdisk, and shut down the PC.

Boot the PC, enter BIOS settings, and set the PC to boot from the CD drive.
Insert the XP CD into the drive, and save settings and exit BIOS setup.

The XP installer should run.
It will ask how you want to set up your hard drive.

Unless your drive is under 8MB, OR you need to access the drive form DOS or Windows 9X, I recommend that you use the NTFS file system.

If your PC cannot / will-not boot from the XP CD, you will need to download the CORRECT XP floppy disk creation utility from Microsoft.
