upgrade options for Socket7

By symesd ·
I have a Gateway Essential 450 (socket7) with an AMD K6-2 and am wondering about upgrading...can it handle a faster processor? Gateway uses a VLI chipset on the motherboard. Any thoughts?

You want to upgrade you PC.
You dont say what CPU speed you currently have but you will be very lucky to get a faster AMD k6-2 processor.

Your best bet is to change your mainboard and CPU and may be even your RAM.

If you require any more helpplease get back.

The "450" mentioned in the model is the CPU speed 450Mhz. I'm just wondering if the Socket 7 can take a faster processor. The motherboard is VLI System V. I'm putting 128MB PC133 in it.

You may be able to go with a 500Mhz K6 2 chip but it's probably not worth it. Also remember that your memory will not run faster than the bus speed of your processor.

thanks - looks like we need to stick with the processor for a little longer.
