Upgrade to Raid 5

By TRJimr ·
We have an NT server which is used as an ftp server. We want to upgrade it to raid 5.
We have to save all of the user accounts otherwise it would take forever to set them up again.
How can we backup all of the user accounts and then restore them? or can we use ghost to image the entire drive and then restore the image?
(I thought ghost required that the hardware be nearly identical which it won't be because we are adding raid 5)

thanks

You don't need to do anything if your "upgrade" means to add a secondary raid 5 drive. You can keep the system drive in place and just add the raid as an "extra". Then all you have to do is to move your files from the primary drive to the raid drive.
If your server is a domain controller you can wipe it compleetly by doing the following steps:
1. if it's a PDC promote one of the BDC to PDC
2. save all important files to another system
3. reinstall your server over the new raid drive as a BDC in the domain
4. promote your server back to PDC
Steps 1 and 4 are required if your server is a PDC only.

If it's not a domain controller then you're stuck with adding the raid as a secondary drive, which sould be OK.
