How do you upgrade a Win NT 4 server to Win 2000 without losing any data?; (without having to reformat)

Windows 2000 provides you with the option to upgrade Windows NT 4.0 Server to Windows 2000 server during the install process.

You can perform the upgrade with no problem...make sure that if your considering upgrading a PDC/BDC that the PDC is done first. All files and data should stay in place. But like anyone will tell you make sure you have a good backup of everything and your ERP (Emergency Repair Disk) is updated.....

Also make sure that Mcafee antivirues is UNINSTALLED. It will cause problems if it is on your system.

As long as you have decent hardware you should be fine. Put the lastest NT service pack on the server. Be sure to do a full tape back up before the upgrade. Also update the ERD disk before. You should at least disable any antivirus, but Microsoft recommends uninstalling it completley - its probably not compatible with Win2K anyways.

Other than that, just pop the cd in and let it run.

I just wanted to and one thing. In order to do an upgrade you have to be up and running in NT 4.0 insert the cd and let it run. You cannot boot with the 2000 cd and do an upgrade you will only be able to do a fresh install.
