Upgrade Win98 to Win98SE

By sknobloc ·
Is there a way to upgrade Win98 to Win98SE? I have both versions but Win98 is currently loaded and I would like to upgrade to Win98SE if I can do it without reloading. Are there huge advantages of Win98SE over Win98?

Thanks,

Scott

Upgrade Win98 to Win98SE

Scott,
If you purchase an upgrade version of Win98 it will most certainly be SE and it will upgrade the earlier version of Win98 just fine. I have done this MANY times and have only had one machine "freak" on me and I had to uninstall the upgrade (which went off without a hitch).. regarding huge advantages, I would not call them "huge" but I do feel that SE is more stable and it also has a LOT more drivers than the original version...

Scott,

Regarding the "full" versions you have... The real question is; are they "OEM" versions? (if the manual says "For distribution with a new PC only) OEM versions will usually NOT install if they find another Operating system already installed, requiring a format.. As far as critical updates that you have already applied staying the same, my best GUESS would be No, they would probably be overwritten...

Yes you could upgrade to Win 98SE but you didn't say whether you had a full or upgrade version but i'm assuming that you have the full. Installing the full version only means you will have to redo your display settings and won't effect your other program files. If you have the upgrade nothing would be affected except the change to Win 98SE.
With newer versions there is always fixes and a few things that run even better than before. Of course you can go to windows update to get all the fixesyou need but i'm not totally sure if there is a huge advantage but it sure wouldn't hurt. And after you have it installed windows update will have updates for Internet Explorer 5.5 and Outlook Express and some service packs that fix even a few moreproblems they have come across.
Well i would say go for it it wouldn't hurt unless you have already done all the updates and windows update site. Because installing Win 98SE will probably change things to the way Win 98SE was setup and you would have to download any updates you would need to update.
Maybe someone else could fill in the blanks i missed but hope this will give you food for thought.

You can order the Win98 SE update disk directly from Microsoft for $20.00. The main advantage of SE over regular 98 is that SE comes with Internet Connection Sharing.

Both versions I own are full versions. I understand from the second answer that if I do the full install with Win98SE that my programs and settings will stay intact except for the monitor settings? Also, I have done all the critical updates with theold version I'm running. I just want to fully clarify this before I go ahead and do it. Thanks again for your help.

Rename the file c:\windows\win.com to something else. Copy the \win98 subdirectory from the SE CD to the C: drive and run SETUP.
