Upgrade Windows 2000 AD server to 2003

By jeffb ·
Can you upgrade a Windows 2000 AD contoller to 2003 without upgrading AD? Can a Windows 2003 server act as an AD controller for 2000 AD?

yes u can upgrade.but i don't know why u don't want to upgrade AD.And i don't know can we upgrade only WindowsOS Not AD. but recently i upgraded my DCs(2Nos) to windows2003 it is alos upgraded AD but no Data or accounts loss. it is 100% complatible for windows2000 DC. it is better to take backup of AD.if anything happens u can restore it in windows2003 directly.

You can attach a Win2K3 server to a Win2K AD domain, but only if the Win2K3 server will be only a member server, not a DC. If you want the Win2K3 machine to be a DC, you have to upgrade AD by running forestprep and domainprep on your global master DC first.

Hope this helps!
