Can you upgrade XP Home to XP Pro using a full version of XP Pro rather than an upgrade?( That is if such an upgrade exists)

I personally am not to hot on operating system upgrades, replacement and fresh install fine but upgrades tend to leave to much baggage behind and then you're always wondering when a problem occurs is it because of the upgrade not loading something it should have or not removing something it should have. Back up your data files, fdisk/format the drives and install the full version and service packs. Good luck

Check out the matrix at the following URL:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/matrix.asp

(remove any embedded spaces from the URL)

This matrix will show you which Windows products will qualify you to use the upgrade version. XP Home IS eligible to be upgraded to XP Professional. If you already have the full version of XP Pro, you can use that to accomplish an upgrade, but you must run setup from within your current version of Windows.

Answer 2 in incorrect. Upgrade from Home to Pro is supported and Microsoft ran a GoPro promotion encouraging users to do just that. They offered a $75 rebate if the user bought Pro from the same dealer from whom they got Home within 30 days of theoriginal purchase. I made this upgrade myself. I also reinstalled Pro on a clean install from a Pro Upgrade CD. XP will ask for you to insert the CD for an earlier version of windows and then proceed with installation. There is no difference between the Upgrade and Full install CD's except that the Upgrade CD will look for another version of Windows. The Microsoft XP website lists Home to Pro as an officially supported upgrade path. This is NOT true of Office Standard to Pro, however, andthis may be the source of Answer 2's confusion.
