Upgrading a W2k domain to W2K3

By rgajjar ·
Hi all.

I am investigating the correct way of running adprep /forestprep and adprep /domainprep to upgrade the client's AD 2000 domain to AD 2003.

I think i got the procedure documented but what worries me is how do i ensure that each individual domain controller has received the change? There are over 300 domain controllers for the client across the country.

I want to make sure that when I run the forestprep part all domain controllers have received the update before running the domainprep part? The domain structure consists of a root domain, a child domain and a further child domain.

Any help would be appreciated.

To update from windows 2000 to 2003 you need to run ADPREP (Forestprep/Domainprep has nothing to do with 2003 upgrade).

Then you make sure all the DCs have the latest Schema updates before upgrading the first servers.

To check replication, check this attribute:
The CN=Windows2003Update,CN=DomainUpdates,CN=System,DC=dn path of domain you are upgrading object exists and the value for the Revision attribute matches the value of the same attribute on the infrastructure master of the domain.
