Upgrading an AMD Slot A Processor

By andy ·
Is there a converter available which will allow me to use the new generation Socket A AMD processors in my Slot A motherboard. I have seen Slot 1 to Socket 1 converters for Intel chips but no equivalent for AMD.
My current motherboard is an MS-6195ATX IR3 (K7 Pro) fitted with an 750mhz Athlon

Aloha!

Don't you mean you have seen a slot one to a socket 370 converter for Intel?

In the case of AMD, the situation isn't as bright. There WAS an adapter, however, there were a lot of problems with various MB's using it. Later they dropped the Socket processors altogether. The adapter was made available to certain MB manufacturers but during testing there were so many problems it was never released to the public. As far as I know only certain OEM MB manufacturers released certain tested systems containing this adapter [pre]assembled with the MB and processor. They are rare but you may be able to find one, however, I wouldn't trust the stability no matter what. Good Luck!

Even if there was a slot convertor, most of the Slot A motherboards do not support the "Thunderbird" processors anyhow, so it would not do you any good.

Further, you will see more overall system speed improvements with a new MB than by even trippling the CPU speed.
ATA100 or 133 hard drive interface
4X AGP slot
DDR ram

These will all make more difference to system performance than a faster CPU.

Sorry if this is a double answer.

I have not seen a Socket A to Slot A converter.
First, most of the slot a mobo's do not support the "Thunderbird" processors. (even the ones built in the slot a module)
Second, even if they did, most don't support speeds over 900MHz.
So, there is no practicle market for a socket to slot converter since it just wouldn't work for most MBs.

The Intel Slot 1 / Socket 370 is essentially the same processor in a different package.

Further, there are manymore system speed advantages to a new MB. A new MB could actually improve performance more than you would see if you trippled the CPU speed.
ATA100 or 133 IDE buss speed
4X AGP port
266MHz front side buss.
DDR memory.

While you may have 4X AGP, you would gain significantly from the ATA100 and DDR ram.

And, if your MB is based on the AMD 750 chipset, your present memory buss speed is 100MHz.
