Upgrading (downgrading) a AD structure.

by tomhill . Updated 25 years ago

I’ve got a Active Directory domain that uses a structure of mycompany.com. It is my active directory as well as a DNS domain. I am providing my internal and external DNS for this domain.

I’m getting ready to have a ISP provide DNS support of my domain. They don’t want to handle the traffic that would be generated by Active Directory and have asked that I split mycompany.com into two domains. I would leave mycompany.com as my external domain with a standard DNS, and create a new internal domain of internal.mycompany.com.

My questions are: How do I do this in Win2K? Is this a DC Promotion? What happens to my user accounts in mydomain.com?

I’ve got 2 AD Domain Controllers for mycompany.com. I think I’d have to demote one, create the new AD structure, then demote the second and have it join the new AD structure.

Thanks,

Tom
