Upgrading from NT SP4 to SP6

By jburch ·
I have a question about service packs. I have a client that has many domain controllers. All of them are at service pack 4. They have one server (member server), that is primarily used to host an ERP system (Jdedwards). They would like to upgrade just the service pack on that server, from service pack 4 to service pack 6a. Do you see any potential problems upgrading one server to service pack 6 and all other servers remaining at service pack 4?

I have a domain in which all servers (including the PDC) are running SP6a, apart from 2 which are still on SP4. I have not noticed any problems whatsoever.
The only problem I am aware of with different SP levels is with Exchange, our mail admins have found that you must keep them at the same SP level otherwise things go haywire, but that is the only scenario in which I have heard of problems.

Each service pack cures 100's of problems, but each one seems to introduce 2 or 3 new bugs. I believe SP6 had some problems with Lotus Notes and or Compaq machines. So Microsoft produced SP6a. I would go to Microsofts site and search their technet for known issues with the service pack you are thinking of using. I have found SP3 and SP5 to be excellent. SP6a so far so good

There shouldn't be any problems when upgrading. Just be sure that you select the option to back it up...just incase!

If you use Notes, you must use SP6a, if you use 6, Notes clients will not be able to connect. SP6a has some print spooling improvements that make it worthwhile. I have 6a on most all Dell workstations, couple of HP & Dell servers and have not seen ANY problems with serveral servers still on SP4 and SP5.
