Upgrading from Win95 to Win98

By JimHarbert ·
I am trying to upgrade from Windows 95 to Windows 98 SE using the full version CD and not the upgrade CD. I get an error message stating that my computer already has an operating system which cannot be upgraded by this version of setup and to use the Windows 98 Upgrade CD. Is there a way to still use the full version CD without reformatting and starting over.

Hi,
1..Bootup system in w95, insert w98se Cd into
cdrom, use file management to copy win98se setup directory into your Hdd.
2..Reboot the system and press F8, choose bootup in dos mode,
3..Go into windows directory, delete "win.com " file.
4..Go to the directory which you had just copyed from win98se cdrom, type "setup".
5..Installation of win98se will start with no
error message.
***make sure once the setup process ask which directory you would to install win98se, make sure that you go to "c:\windows", not c:\windows.000!!!
This will collect all your old setup programs in win95. If previous program can work in win98se, then good for you.

done.. Good Luck.

If the reason you dont want to format is b/c you dont want to loose the data but you dont care about drivers and programs than here is what I do:
1. Boot to CD or Floppy.
2. At the prompt type: c: and press enter
3. Type: attrib msdos.sys -h -r -s
4. Type: attrib io.sys -h -r -s
5. Type: del msdos.sys
6. Type: del io.sys
7. Type: ren windows oldwin
8. Type: ren progra~1 oldprogr
9. Type: ren mydocu~1 oldmydoc
10. run setup from CD or copy setup files to harddrive and run setup form harddrive.
after the installation is done you can safely delete the folder named oldwin and copy all data you might have in oldprog to program files and then delete oldprog next copy all files from oldmydoc to my documents and then delete oldmydoc.
dont try using deltree for windows directory for some reason every computer I tried it on hanged.
