Upgrading from Windows Me to XP

By mforetic ·
Currently, I am running Windows Me. I have the upgrade version of Windows XP, and I want to delete Windows Me, format the HDD, and install XP from scratch. How can I make the upgrade version of XP to install from scratch?

Thanks!

Yes, as long as you have the CD for Windows Me.

You can start the install of XP with a blank un-partitioned drive if you want.

You do need to be able to boot from CD, or download floppy boot package, and create the 6 disk floppy bot set.

Atsome point during the install, XP will ask you for your previous version Windows CD. Once it verifies that you have a copy of an upgradable OS, the installation will complete.

If you don't have the Me CD, any install CD for an OS that qualifies for the upgrade will work.

Alternately, if it is time for a larger hard drive, you could install the new drive as Master, and the drive with Me as slave.
Install XP, then delete Me, or remove the drive.

You could also set up for a dual boot if you want to add an extra drive. That way, if you ever needed to, you could easily go back to Me.

I recently upgraded from 98se to XP. During the installation process, you are asked if you would like to retain or remove your previous operating system. I choose to remove 98 and did not encouner any problems. One thing I would like to advise you on is if you are connected to a cable modem and you choose to have a user id and password function invoked. XP will not load virus protection or your firewall until you have clicked on your name/user id and entered your password. The reason from what I can determine is that XP loads your setting preferences at the point of your log in.

Sometimes, all you may need is the ME/98 CD to make the Qualifying components

Also, another thing is to use the ME install and to choose a clean install. It sometimes works
