    Upgrading IE on NT4.0

    by cadams ·

Does anyone remember if there are any known problem upgrading from IE 4 to IE5.5? When I upgrade I get a message saying “Cannot upgrade with current network setting changes have been made system will reboot”. The system reboots and the problems begin. I get Dr. Watson errors on Explorer.exe about every 30 seconds and I can no longer run most things ( windows explorer, my computer etc.) the only solution is to reinstall NT and start again.

I seem to remember that when upgrading certain version of IE you had to remove the older version first, but I can’t find anything about this anywhere.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Try upgrading to IE 4.01 with SP2 first.

Try reinstalling your NT Service Pack. I use SP6a

If memory serves me you need at least SP4 on the NT machine, you also need to watch out for which SP you are installing, one has the previous lower encription 48bit the other 128bit (in most cases accessing things like online banking you will need the 128bit high encription version), if you do not install the correct one it can cause problems, but I do not think that this is what your error means.

When upgrading IE or any other app on NT you need to log in to the OS using the local Admin account, once in upgrade IE the installation will complete and reboot, once the system has rebooted again log into the NT system using the local Admin account (the changes have not been fully completed yet!)
Once the system has finished updating itselfreboot again, this time log in as a normal user would and IE should be upgraded on all accounts that reside on that particular NT system.

      Hope this is of use.
