Upgrading my CPU

By zabuddy ·
Hello, I just bought an older PC (about 6 years old) to do some exploring with it. It didn't come with any manuals. I want to upgrade my CPU. It currently has a 266 AMD chip and a socket 7. What will be the biggest and best performance CPU that willfit and work properly. Thank You

Upgrading my CPU

You probably already have the best cpu chip that will work with that mobo, being 6 years old. To properly answer the question you need to have the mobo manual which most likely describes settings for various clock rates and chips. I suggest it would be better to save your money for a newer computer rather than upgrading a legacy box of that vintage. There's a better than 50% chance that a faster chip would lead to trouble with other parts of the computer.

Some of your exploring could be with over-clocking the present chip. Maybe you can identify the mobo and find docs on the net.
