Upgrading SBS4.5 to separate Exchange5.5

By PSX ·
I am running SBS 4.5 (which includes a lite version of Exchange 5.5). I just bought a new server for use as a dedicated Exchange server.
The problem is that I could not find a way to move my Exchange users from the SBS server over to the new Exchange 5.5 server. I found some solutions on migrating users from one Exchange server to another but nothing on migrating from SBS4.5 Exchange to a standalone Exchange 5.5 box.

I tried installing the new Exchange server onto a new site using a different server name (of course) under the same organization name. I was able to create a site connector and link the two Exchange servers. However, the "Move users" option is grayed out.

How do I move my users over to the new server? I tried replicating the SBS Exchange server but only a couple of items were replicated.

You cannot move users or create new sites and connections with the SBS version. Heres the easiest way. Create a new Org and site on the Full version. Have the users save all their data to a .PST file. Recreate their accounts on the new install then let them log in. Then import thier data into their new Exchange accounts. Since you are using SBS you can't have that many users to do this for.

The other way will require hours on Technet searching through error docs. Trust me I did the same thing a couple of years ago with 6 sites.

I found this out already. I was also considering using the Exchange Move Wizard but it makes changes to the existing server which I do not like.

I did search all over for a simple migration solution but no body has anything on moving from an SBSExchange.

Anyway, thanks for your answer. It was a little bit late since I've already found the solution but I will give you the points anyway because your answer is on the spot.

By the way, for those of you looking to export users' mailboxes out to PST files, there is a utility called "EXMERGE". Do a search on Microsoft's website and you will find it.
