Upgrading to Dual Processor - Reinstall

By lisa_rogers0997 ·
I am upgrading my Compaq NT 4.0 SP5 to a dual processor. I am going to try using UPTOMP from the resource kit.

The server is running Exchange 5.5 SP3. Do I need to reinstall any or all of Exchange after upgrading besides maybe reapplying the SP ?
Has anyone used the UPTOMP ? Any warning hints or help would be much appreciated.
Thanks !

I have personally never had good luck with the uptomp utillity. The couple of times I have tried to use it I encountered problems. I have found that rebuilding the machine from scratch a much better option. I understand that a production server may not be able to be down that long but hopefully that's not the case with your server.

Thanks for the feedback.. Head Office didn't want to do the reinstall, they thought the utility would save some time.
This is a new, not in production yet server, so I would much rather do something I know will be clean.
Thanks again !

Since it is a compaq, I would use the NT SSD that can be found on there website. If you haven't used it, it is a utility for installing compaq drivers and such. In it there is a multiproccesor upgrade, the top selection I think, just click on it. I think it asks for the nt disk or the Service Pack files for the MP Hal files, reboot and you are all done. There is also a recovery option that gives the option to load as a single processor machine if needed. Used it several time without any problems.
SP are always good to reapply after changes but shouldn't be needed.

Thanks for the feedback I will try Compaq's utility. The server's not in production yet, so if all fails I can rebuild.

I have used both uptomp and the compaq ssd. The compaq stuff works great. Uptomp had failed on me twice using dell servers. Had to manually install, lucky i had fat partitions.
Reapply the service paks after the ssd.
