upgrading to W2K--HELP!

By W2K mcse ·
Help!!! I'm reading everything I can but cannot find data with respect to my situation. I have a current NT 4.0 domain with a PDC. I do not want to upgrade my PDC to 2000 but instead implement a brand new 2000 domain controller and take the pdc offline. My problem is I want to keep the same domain. The only info I can find is either upgrading the PDC (its a tired old horse) or creating a new domain with the new server. I want a new DC (2000) in the existing domain. I need help fast. Anybody outthere please help.

Try installing the new server as a NT4 BDC, promote the server as the PDC, upgrade the PDC to Windows 2000.

Thanks, but at what point should I kill the old PDC?

DC1 Has it right. To answer your follow-up question, when you promote the new server to PDC, the old one will demote to a BDC automatically. If you aren't using it, you can kill it then, or you can wait until the new one is upgraded to 2000. I wouldrecommend waiting. That way, you still have it available if something goes wrong with the upgrade.

Good luck!

DC1 and JFruits,

Thanks a heck of a lot for your help. I owe you both a big one. I will try this tonight.

Just to add to that, and I'm not sure if it's all that simple, but I believe you're going to be looking for a tool like upromote.
