upgrading to windows 2000

i need to upgrade a winnt4.0 that has an exchange 5.5 server to a windows 2000 server with a exchange 2000, what do i do 1st, upgrade the windows 1st, or my exchange 1st, and will there be any effects on my mail boxes after the migration.
