The title of this thread says “upgrade pro FROM home” but your question says “upgrade pro TO home”. You can’t upgrade XP Pro to XP Home.

If you are talking about going from XP HOME > XP PRO, you can purschase an ‘upgrade only’ version of XP PRO and just upgrade directly and not lose anything.

However, if you have the XP Pro CD (full version) then you can install it to a new partition or same partition, but as long as you don’t format, you won’t lost any data. You will however need to reinstall all your programs and configure your settings from scratch. Doing it this way will also allow you to dual-boot both versions, so in case your XP Pro has problems, you can still boot to the Home version and be okay.

Either way, if you can backup your data to a CD or something, do it, just to be on the safe side.

I’ve experienced many problems upgrading without first doing a format. Setup files seem to get mixed up or some files will not overwrite others and problems seem to arise after the upgrade has completed. Your best bet would be to backup your data and do a clean install. Although it’s a tedious process, it may save you irritating error messages in the future. Good luck.
