Upgrading Win98 to XP

By jwerner ·
So in trying to upgrade my 6-year-old Compaq that I've been neglecting for some time, I hoped to add XP, but after getting through the bios it just goes blank. The strange thing is that I can boot in safe mode and it runs beautifully. (can't get to the internet, but otherwise) So why if I can get it going it safe mode is it getting stuck on a regular boot? Any help would be awesome!

Hi

Sounds suspiciously like a video driver problem to me. (When you boot into Safe Mode, a default driver is used for your video).

Update the driver and let us know how you get on.

Good luck

I agree with the video system being at the root.

If you have a different monitor available, try that first.

I have had several older systems where the default XP video settings are not supported by the monitor, and the monitor goes blank.

I updated the driver but still couldn't get to the welcome menu... I'll try to track down another monitor this week and let you know.

Thanks a lot guys!

Flashing the BIOS to the latest available wouldn't go astray either.

That was a Must Do with a lot of Intel Systems when SP2 was applied.
