UPS Ineffective on One Workstation

By TPCosmo ·
I have one workstation that will not stay powered up while connected to a UPS. Putting the UPS into test mode will kill the workstation instantly. I'm using a APC Smart 420 on a Win 98 box. The same UPS works fine on another workstation of the same make/model, and I just have the box and monitor plugged into it, so I dont think im overloading the UPS. The user also complains of a 'hot mouse', and I have actually felt it, and it does get kinda warm sometimes. Do you think it could be the computer power supply?

Thanks a lot,
Tom Costello

Basically, mouse use serial ports and in this ports, they have positive voltage, i.e. 5 VDC and if your mouse is getting warm, something in that mouse circuitry that shorts the power supply. Try to replace first the mouse and see if the workstation and UPS works perfectly.

I have seen this quite a bit. Putting an APC UPS into test mode and having it drop power to the serviced unit indicates a failed UPS. If it is in warranty, APC stands behind their products well. If not, they have a trade-in value through their reseller.

If you are using something like power chute, it may be a bad power supply, unable to support suspend to ram. If it's just a straight ups with no other connection to the pc, it's the ups unit, one system may just be more sensitive than the other. By the way, when my wife uses my mouse it gets VERY warm, she even feels it. But its her hands not the mouse.
