Urgent: How to merge two Access DBs

By kesterls15 ·
My database expert on holiday and I have a 2 day deadline and very limited knowledge.
I have two DBs. One held by customer (original) and one held by me (updated).
Each db has both matching and unique fields.
50% of the data is replicated in bothdbs.
My customer wants one db containing all the data.
Other than manually entering the data (about 1 gig) into the new version is there another way to merge both databases together.

Urgent: How to merge two Access DBs

I need more information about your db's. Do they have the same tables (names and field layouts)?
When you say 50% replicated in each do you mean each has 50% of the total required data to be merged?

Assuming the tables are the same and there is one of each table name in each database and finally that the table records are unique then:

The simplest way to merge the data would be to create a new Access database. Import each of the tables in each of the existing db's. Then highlight one table, select "edit",then "paste", (be sure to select the structure only option) and name the table a new name. That will create an empty table with the same structure as the existing tables. Then create an append query that appends the contents of eachof the existing tables into the new table. That new table should have all the data from both databases.

You can delete the original tables, compact the database and you'll be done....maybe!

Hello,

It's difficult to answer your question satsfactorily unless more details are available.

But you can try to combine the databases using append query.

See on-line help for more details.

Your feedback will be highly appreciated.

If the databases are identical. Ie. Maybe the one the customer has a copy of your with just different info. The easiest solution would be to use the briefcase to sync the two databases together.

Using this method will eliminate the possibility of duplicate information being introduced into the database.

For more info on this option go to ?Start?, ?help? and look up ?Briefcase?.

there is one thing all these solutions have failed to address and that is the removal of the duplicate information.
The best solution is to create a empty copy of the database. I assume that because there are 2 copies, that they are identical in structure and name.
You need to know how to identify a duplicate. Possibly there is a record ID in the tables, if so, this is ideal. In the newly created table, make that field a PRIMARY KEY.
Append the first table to the empty copy. Now append the second table. For all the records you attempt to append that already exist will be excluded as they will break the rules of the primary key. This will ensure that all the records appear, and appear only once.
