By ajay_koka ·
hi gurus,

iam new to this area, my managment has given me the work to look/buy for a server machine.
i would like to know the requirements for selecting a server. i need to buy a server in which windows 2000 is os, oracle 8iserver, java server, asp with suitable virus software.
This is for a cleint company where they deal with water proffing solution business, work for 12hrs to 14 hrs a day and data is important as they have daily sales and customers data.
shall i go for a raid 1 or 5 with 2 cpu system.

thanks
ajay

Hi

Go for RAID 1 which mirrors the data between two identical drives - if one drive fails, the other can take its place because it is an up-to-date exact copy. As for 1 or 2 cpu's - depends on how many clients will be accessing the system, and how much work the system will be doing - will you be using terminal services to provide applications? Will there be a lot of database number crunching? You should also consider at least 512MB RAM.

Good luck

Hi

OK, if you are after info on RAID, try here:

and especially here:

I disagree with going with RAID 1. You should choose RAID 5 in most cases for a server that is running OS and DATABASE.

Mirror or raid 1 offers some advantages of speed due to overhead or parity bits, but will not offer a good solution for you should a drive fail.

Please see links from other poster for more information.

I would def go with a 2 cpu setup as the workload simply to run Oracle will take one cpu itself to run smoothly.

Good Luck...
