USB 1 or 2 and external HDD

By fong829 ·
Hi, I havae a Dell Inspiron 8200. Would you think that I have USB 1 or USB 2? And how would I be able to find out. The think is that I am interested in buying an external hard drive case to install an internal hard drive in it using an USB/USB 2 interface. Do you think I am doing the right think or would a i394 port be better? Thanks in advace

I'd go for a 1394 interface. It's faster and has more possibilities.

Go to the Device Manager, click on Universal Serial Bus Contollor.Look at the list-Enhanced Host Contollor or USB 2.0 is USB 2.0-Universal Host Contollor or Open Host Contollor is USB 1.1

Hope this helps.

The 8200s are USB 1.1. You have 2 options: 1.Use firewire 2. Get a USB 2.0 PCMCIA card. Unless you're going to be transferring large amounts of data USB 1.1 might work for you. USB 2.0 hardware is backward compatible with USB 1.1.
