USB 1.1 vs. 2.0

By Julied ·
I need to purchase an external CD-RW that will work with multiple machines, some new and some several years old. All are running W2K. Can I purchase a drive that uses USB 2.0 or will that not work with the older machines?

USB 2.0 devices will be backward compatible with older USB 1.1 specifications.

See the fourth paragraph in the below article from PC Magazine:

USB 2.0 devices are backward compatible, but I would highly recommend you upgrade to take advantage of 2.0's performance if you expect to use the CD-RW on the machine with some regularity. The adapter cards are not very expensive for the huge jump in speed.

Good luck! Hope this helps....
