USB 3.0 ports don’t pick up USB 2.0 devices

Hi everyone, so I am having a strange issue on my Toshiba laptop (Satellite Pro R50-C-197)
When I plug a USB 3.0 device like a flash drive into my usb 3.0 ports, they work fine but when I plug any USB 2.0 device in the same ports, they dont get picked up. They only work in the usb 2.0 ports. Not sure when exactly this started happening but I have done a clean install of windows 10 installed all the driver on from the manufacturer website but its still not working. Anyone know how I can fix this?

That’s strange. I wonder if it’s software or hardware.

A perfect diagnosis is to check the behavior after booting from a Linux disc or stick; they are free to make, but any repair shop has them and will be able to do it if you prefer to not do it yourself. If it’s OK in Linux, it’s software or settings. If it’s the same in Linux it’s hardware or the BIOS. The BIOS is unlikely, unless this happens after you upgraded or downgraded that recently.

A good workaround is to buy a 4-port USB-2 hub. That should give you more than enough opportunity to connect USB-2 devices. They are cheap.

Toshiba didn’t make it easy.

I can’t find what USB 3.0 controller was in that laptop.

I’ll give a nod to https://superuser.com/questions/482179/usb-3-0-ports-backwards-compatibility-problems-with-2-0-devices where folk go over what to try next but as I don’t know which USB 3.0 controller was used, I have to wait for you to tell that.

Is the voltage sufficient
