USB 4 Gig thumb drive failures

By dellservicepro ·
I have some Sony brand MicroVault USB 2.0 4 gig "thumb drive" I obtained several of these from a friend returning from China. After a couple of uses, the drive acts like a cdrom. The Sony software does not work on this drive. The Sony data sheet accompanying the drive shows it to be a model number USM4GU2. I have carefully disassembled the drive and found inside two identifiable chips. the smaller (probably controller chip) is marked as follows:

CREATE
I5062-ZD
L527
CE5615.0

The second and larger chip on the other side of the pc board is branded and marked as follows

INFINEON
1YF33DS512800ATC
SUU30529

p.s. For the first person supplying me with a working solution, I will send you one of these drives strictly as a token of my appreciation.

If your running Windows 2000 there's a HotFix KB835732 you may require, I'd suggest downloading the Format software & the Operating Instructions (PDF), both located at the bottom of the page at the 2nd link.

John - could you be a little more specific as to what you mean by this:

After a couple of uses, the drive acts like a cdrom.

Thanks.

Thanks for the question as to "after a few uses" What happens is that I used the drives to copy data, move them to another machine, back and forth, reformatted the drive, suddenly when I put the drive into another or the same machine, I get the message "Please insert disk" like a cdrom without a cd in it. Thanks to all. p.s. the Sony software doesn't work, so what software is available to me to analyize or re flash the bios on these thumb drives?

wow, it would have not occured to me to take the thing carefully apart to check inside for the problem. nudge rdl
have you heard about a bug with windows where if you open a file for edit on a usb drive then try to eject the drive without saving the file it will cause problems.
i bet they talk about this on the microvault website or try searching under your os at support.microsoft.com for, say, 'usb hard drive'

Does it occur to you that this is a fake product. If you go to Sony Web site and search for the product model, you don't get any answer. My friends bought a few too, but they failed to function after a few times. So go check the Sony products from their web site before purchasing any of them from China.

I cannot be much help, but I am looking for the same answer. I have what appears to be an identical flash drive purchased for me on eBay. The seller has now closed his account, or course.

Mine worked to be recognized as a Sony drive the first time on a XP Pro laptop. but I was getting errors copying to it, so I formatted it with Windows. Ever since then, on every other computer, it gives the same message of "Insert disk into Drive X".
Think anyone has the way to flash the "firmware" or such back on it to make it work?
