USB after upgrade from NT4 to W2K

By lmayeda ·
I recently installed W2K onto an NT4 workstation (reformated hard drive) and have not been able to use the USB port (exclamation mark on device manager). I do not know if the USB port worked previously. This is an old Dell Dimension workstation and I have not been able to locate a USB driver. I've noticed on the NT forum that USB is not supported. Can anyone point me to my best option? Thanks

USB is supported under Win2K although it wasn't under WinNT. The problem is likely that the machine is too old and Win2K doesn't have native USB drivers that will work with the port. It may even be that though there is a USB port on the motherboard, it is somehow disabled because the machine was loaded with NT. If Dell doesn't have Win2K drivers available for that motherboard, you are probably SOL. Sorry!

check first if in bios it is not disabled (I believe with dell's you have to hit F2)
second check with Dell if the is a firmware upgrade for your pc.
Most likely the second option will work, since the machine is seeing the usb.

I don't know of any older Intel chipset USB ports that are not supported by Win2K. It almost has to be Intel, since Dell uses only Intel CPUs and, from what I've seen, Intel chipsets.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling USB ports in Device Manager. Also check Intel web site for drivers specific to chipset on motherboard. They should still be available.

You probably need to install the motherboard drivers for W2K to enable motherboard features such as USB.
