usb device malfunction only on HP Notebook

I have a customers lexmark x4550 printer i have downloaded latest driver for vista and tried to install it. when i plug the printer in via usb it sometimes states the usb device has malfunctioned but if i change usb port it works fine and if i go back to the original port it will work but if i change to another port it may not recognise again.
whats going on. Vista Premium with sp1 and fresh recovered OS.
printer works every time on my toshiba on every port on Vista Ultimate with SP1

this sounds like an overly aggressive registry cleaning and you may have to do a a restore repair.

i have just done a full recovery (fresh install of windows)on this notebook and installed SP1 and nothing else except the latest drivers for the printer. have been fixing pc,s for 8 years and don't know what is the issue here, is it a dodgey usb controller or bad CPU requests ?????? HELP

It turned out to be a usb cable that did not have good enough sheilding.

tried a new cable and it works every time.
