usb drive not visible

I have a dell d600 laptop with windows xp sp3, after joinig the computer to a new domain, some usb devices are recognized and visible in windows explorer, however one usb drive doesn't show in explorer unless you are logged on as administrator, anyone have any ideas what might be causing this

Possibly a couple different things..

There may be a GPO preventing certain users from installing drivers for USB devices.


There maybe a network drive mapped with the letter the USB drive is trying to acquire.
If it is the latter, you can go to the disk management console and reassign it a new letter. Start > Run > diskmgmt.msc scroll down the list for a drive without a letter, right click and choose change drive letter and paths.

you can also try this
with the usb drive plugged in
start run devmgmt.msc
scroll down to usb
remove the root hubs
then right click on any device in the list and scan for hardware changes

I removed the usb root hubs and the device from device manager, rebooted and it was working
