usb external hard disk

i bought an external usb hard disk and it was working fine with a pentium4 on windows xp. Now i changed my system to a pentium3 on xp but it doesnt recognise the usb hard disk. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Its a seagate 80 GB external usb hard disk.

I assume you changed more than just the CPU ...

What do you mean you changed from a Pentium 4 to a Pentium 3? Was this just the chip you changed?

Did you change the entire machine? If so, you may not have Service Pack 2 and the system cannot identify the USB peripherals without SP2.

Well as a P3 is a Socket 370 and different to a P4

You have also changed the M'Board, so have you installed the USB Drivers for this replacement M'Board?

All things being equal otherwise it has to work so you need to look at either the USB Ports being disabled in BIOS or No USB Drivers Installed. Recognizing external USB Devices is a function f the OS not the Hardware though a P3 M'Board may only have USB1.1 Hardware available to it so any Data Transfers between the Computer and the USB Drive may take longer.
