USB & Firewire Ports

By pbernhardt1 ·
How do I set up the USB & Firewire ports on my
WINXP Computer. I had them working but a few days ago, the system ceased recognizing the external HDD attached to the firewire port. When I checked the driver status in hardware properties, the system said there was no driver. I have many files on that drive that I need to access.

USB & Firewire Ports

by TwitchMyth In reply to USB & Firewire Ports

Welcome to windows XP! usually this sort of symptom is caused by a registry corruption or something equally mindless...but it could be a h/w fault.

Try add hardware, just search, and also try updating your mobo drivers and BIOS. If neither of these work, it might be worth your while trying an alternate 1394 device - even if you have to go to some computer store and ask (beg) them to test with one of their devices. Even a reinstall of windows is worth trying...if you can stand it...

If you still have no firewire, the easiest alternative short of a warranty call or new mobo is to go and buy a PCI 1394 card - will provide a couple of ports through the PCI bus and therefore should work.
