USB flash drive driver missing

By Jay Garmon Contributor ·
I have a SanDisk Cruzer Titanium 1GB USB flash drive that has suddenly stopped working on my Windows XP Home Machine. The device worked perfectly for about three months when suddenly--totally out of the blue--WIndows has started classifying it as an unknown device with no driver installed. SanDIsk claims the driver is native WIndows XP, but I can delete it by editing the Windows registry. Even if I was satisfied with this solution--I'm not; it seems like unnecessary brute force--the specified entries to delete are not present in registry!

Any ideas why my flash drive went wonky? And better yet, how do I fix it?

Your drive may be bad. Check out the following site. Scroll down and read what other owners have discovered.

a simple fix, if it is windows specific, not the drive gone bad.

with the drive plugged in, open the hardware manager and delete the flash drive.
this forces windows to re-install the drivers completely.

As you haven't said any differently I would be looking at the USB Drive rather than anything else here. I go through quite a lot of them as they don't seem overly reliable.

I've had quite a few fail all together so unless it's working on another computer I would be looking at the drive first as the culprit.
