USB Flash Drive Not recognized

By chitosunday ·
I am using Presario 900 Compaq with a usb of 1. When i use a USB flash drive memory, i have to reboot first before i can access it. If i don't , it sometimes detect my flash drive but when i look for it in my computer directory, it is not present. How can i find it without rebooting it everytime i put it.

What OS are you using?
Try to download the driver of your USB flash drive, and install it.

I am using windows XP. I think there is no problem with the driver because it works after i reboot my computer or when i put the device before i turn on my computer.

MS produced several USB problems with some recent patches their solution was to shut down the compute remove the mains plug for 2 minutes and then plug back in and reboot.

This generally solves problems with USB Devices on XP.

There can be two problem: 1) FLASH drive itself 2) Driver problem with OS.

If you are using Windows 98 then that problem may occur frequently. With XP you will not have that problem. Uninstall old driver or Flash and Install New drivers from your COMPAQ cd or dvd which may you have or you may have cd with your FLASH drive.

Also check your FLASH drive with someone else's PC or Laptop with different OS. If it works there nicely then there is no problem with your FLASH drive. So You need to work with drivers only.

There may be conflict if 1.0 version you are using. Check it with vendor.

Good Luck

if you go to the disk management inside the computer manager

then see if the drive has been recognised and mounted

under XP it may be there is a drive letter clash or similar

drive letter can be reallocated without a reboot

else check in device manager to see if the drive can be seen and you can force a scan for hardware changes
