It might be a fake one

by Bizzo In reply to USB Flash drive

It might not be a legitimate 8GB drive. It's probably a genuine 2GB drive that has been "oversized" to 8GB. Read here for more information on how to detect fake USB drives http://www.passmark.com/support/bit_fake_USB_detection.htm

I messed up a 16 GB once by formatting...

by Darryl~ Moderator In reply to USB Flash drive

it and removing a program that is required so it could access the full 16 GB....mine also only showed 2 GB.

In my case, it is a Verbatim & I had to download & install v-Safe100.exe from their site to bring it back to normal.

Check the manufacture's site & see if you have something similar happening.

I'll check the manufacturers site of my usb and search if they can give me some software to retrieve my 8 Gb flash drive. Thanks a lot!

It's not so much them having software to retrieve the size

by OH Smeg In reply to Thank you very much!

But Software than needs to be on the USB Drive for it to function as a 8 GIG unit.

Some of these are Compressed to give 8 or more GIG so when you remove the compression Utility the drive reverts to it's native size. The other possibility is that this maker is using as Different Memory Range and the USB Drive requires Software to work to the full capacity as it acts as a Interface between the Computer and the Actual RAM in the Thumb Drive to make the Thumb Drive appear to have 8 GIG Capacity.

You'll need to setup the Thumb Drive as per the Makers Instructions and install whatever software is required on the USB Drive.
