USB Hard-drive Meltdown.

A bit of background first:

I’m a musician and music producer by trade so I know the applications I use well, and some
IT stuff, but really only enough to do what I need to do on the IT side.

I have a problem that needs resolution or strategic advice from someone that knows the IT side a lot better than me.

Basically I have Maxtor 6 l2500R0, 200Gb Usb drive that I have been using as a primary drive for all my samples, for aproximately a year and a half.

It has’nt behaved in a strange or anomalous manner for any of this period until recently.
A couple of days ago I ran a defrag using Perfectdisc, that stopped suddenly when it got to that drive, registering some sort of error that I unfortunately neglected to log. I did not continue with the defrag, because I was on my way out,and decided to power the computer down, since it had been on and in use, more or less constanly, for two days.

The next day I decided to back the Maxtor up to another drive.Just before doing so I listened to a tune,in a sequencing package,I had been working on for the last few days, the app I was using suddenly froze and I had to restart it.Upon restarting the app the samples had disappeared, I loaded another tune and the same thing happened.I then went to
My Computer and the drives and their respective partitions while still visible, were now inaccessible.I could not access any of the files or folders.

The drive and partitions can be seen by all the relevant apps on my computer and also other computers, the same message appears though, telling me that the the data is either corrupt or unreadable. It also spins up,when an attempt to access it is made. It does not make any glitching or grinding sounds.

The machine I am using is an E-machines 3210,
with Intel Celeron 2.7 ghz processor, 256 mb
memory,and 80 gig C drive, motherboard unknown.

Also in the logs for the Event Viewer there are 46 entries under ftdisk, for the day the drive went down.

The entries are:

Type – Warning

Event Id – 57

Data

0000: 00 00 00 00 01 00 be 00 ……?.
0008: 02 00 00 00 39 00 04 80 ….9..?
0010: 00 00 00 00 0e 00 00 c0 …….?

Perhaps that may be of some use.

What I need to know is what course of action I should take to retrieve my data and transfer it to another device.I’ve looked at a number of pieces of software that claim to be able to do the job and was wondering if anybody could recommend something. Also I need to be aware of any risks that could further compromise this data, and possibly aggravate the situation.

Thanks in advance.
