usb hard drive

before gone for vacations i 've turned off my pc power.when i come back my win xp didn't recognize my (external) usb hard disk and doesn't work at all.what i can do to make my files of this disk accessible again!

It could be that your drive is actually there. A mapped network drive or other USB device have change dthe drive letter for the drive and messed things up.

Right click on My Computer and select Manage from the drop down window. Under Storage go into Disk management. Look for your drive in the list. It may be there without a drive letter assigned. If you see it assign a drive letter. If this was your drive and something else is listed as the drive now you may need to change the drive letter to something other than and then assign you USB drive .

If that is not the problem I have no idea. I have seen this alotthough with people who have several different USB drives: memory sticks, external hard drives and/or external CD drives.

WXP has a problem with recognizing USB devices that require their own power. Good luck. Remove and reinstall the XP USB driver in Device manager.(Remove, Restart, let XP redetect the USB, reinstall the Windows Drivers), then see if the machine redetects the HD.
