I installed Windows Vista and it worked fine for about a day. Now it keeps seeing a USB Mass Storage device that isn’t there and then it alternates between seeing it and not seeing it. It happens so frequently that my games can’t run smoothly and when I’m just working with other applications, the sound of it seeing the connected hardware happens so frequently it’s annoying. I can remove it with the Safely Remove Hardware utility, but then it just appears over and over again. I believe this may have something to do with a Western Digital My Book backup drive that I had connected and then accidentally disconnected. The problem is that it keeps seeing it even though it isn’t plugged in anymore. How can I get rid of this phantom?
I have also tried uninstalling it from the Device Manager screen (when it stays around long enough for me to select that option), but it always comes back.
