USB Mass Storage Devices not Recognized

by ksample . Updated 17 years, 5 months ago

I am having a problem with an employee’s computer not recognizing flash drives. It was able to see them up until 3 days ago with no new software/updates installed. Drive does not show up in disk management and appears as “unknown device” under usb in device manager. The steps I have taken so far include: updating the mb bios, reinstalling mb drivers, deleting all usb entries in DM (including any hidden or previously used usb devices), removing all VID/PID usb entries from the Enum reg directory, checked to make sure the reg Usbstor was on 3 (under currentcontrolset\services), and finally replacing the usbstor.sys and usbstor.inf files in windows\inf and windows\sys32\drivers. All of the above still get the “usb device not recognized” message. I haven’t ran sfc yet nor repaired xp with an install disk, as restoring ALL of the system files is to be a last resort. The specs for the machine are XP Pro, 4GB RAM, Intel Quad Core, Intel D975XBX2 board. Any suggestions to solve this are greatly appreciated!!
