USB Mouse Problem

Dear All,

I have problems getting a USB Mouse work on a Windows XP Home machine even after a fresh install.

We have this old Intel 810 Chipset mobo machine at our lab. It has a connector for a PS2 mouse socket on the board, however that has stopped working. The board has an onboard USB controller (USB 1.1 I guess). So the most logical answer that came to my mind was to use a PS2 to USB adapter. I bought an adapter that has PS2 socket for both a keyboard and a mouse. I let the keyboard stay in its place and connected the mouse via the adapter. The device got recognized as a Human Interface Device and the mouse was working for a while.

I then tried putting in a PCI to USB adapter (USB 2.0) for the portable media etc. The hardware was identified and installed automatically. This is when the mouse stopped working. After that pulling out the PCI to USB adapter, uninstalling and reinstalling the onboard USB controller; nothing seemed to work.

Frustrated I went in for a complete format and install. Managed the entire install with just the keyboard. After installation connected a USB Mouse to the onboard USB jack, but it failed to power up. I pushed in the PCI to USB adapter and then connected the USB mouse, the mouse powered up, but XP failed to recognize it. I even tried the earlier PS2 to USB adapter with a PS2 mouse, but XP failed to recognize it too. Infact even the portable drives wont get detected, while everything seems to fine in the Device Manager.

Any suggestions? I would gladly make myself available for any other info.

Regards,
MFK.
