    USB Network adapters that are pre-configurable

    by cpynch84 ·

    Hello, long of the short is this;

    Client PC’s are locked down adn do not allow IP address changes. We are not able to use the Network operators built in group due to security issues, so I’m looking for a way to allow regular users to change their IP address to work on specific networks.

    I’ve used network adapters that convert wired adapters to to WIFI, and they use a web console to configure the WIFI settings. Are there any USB adapters that allow the hardware to be configured so it can move from PC to PC and keep the same settings without making configuration changes on the PC itself?

    Thanks in advance!

      Assuming you’re talking about a network in a company, let me ask if you mean the internal IP-address (the address in the company network) or the external IP-address (shown to world outside the company). Or is it a company with several internal networks needing different IP-addresses in the clients?

        Hello, thanks for the reply. These are internal IP’s.

        I was using NetSetMan to manage IP addresses for regular users, but it has been forbidden. I got a powershell script working, but again it requires elevation which regular users cant do. I thought about using an encrypted password file, but then I need to encrypt it for each specific PC which is too time consuming.

        Basicallty, looking for an easy way to change IP addresses without prompting UAC (not able to disable due to domain policy) and without requiring a local or domain admin account.

        I thought if a network adapter that has stand alone settings exists it might work (as there are similar bridges for converting a wired connection to a WIFI connection) but I haven’t been able to find any in my searches.

        Was hoping to have a USB adapter that keeps its setting stored on it, so it can go from laptop to laptop without configuration.

          IP settings

          IP modifications require elevated privileges, regardless of the NIC type. If you want a restricted user to be able to modify IP settings, then you’ll need something like NetSetMan Pro that comes with its own Windows service that takes care of the required privileges. Why did you drop this solution?

      Something isn’t being told here.

      At our offices we deploy the addresses via a DHCP server and have never seen a request to change the IP address.

      The phones, tablets and laptops also get use outside the office and again, DHCP takes care of assigning a proper IP address for the network it’s connected to.

      -> As posted there must be something untold in the story.
