USB Pen Drive Hang...

By dfb ·
I have just put a fresh installation of XP on my PC and while everything else seems OK, my 64Mb USB Pen Drive only works for about 5 seconds, after that it seems to lock up my whole PC, even Ctrl/Alt/Del won't work ! However if I unplug it, the PC returns to normal. I have tried my Pen Drive in my laptop and it works fine. It used to work fine in my PC too, before I reinstalled Windows XP, that is.

USB Pen Drive Hang...

You said that you re-installed XP.

Did you then download the critical compatability updates?

Did you re-install the driver for the Pen Drive?

Either or both are at least part of the problem.

In XP no drivers are required for USB Pen Drives ! This is also true for Me !
Critical updates not loaded, nor were they last time, when it worked fine !

USB Pen Drive Hang...

Dave,
I had a similar problem on win98se. It was due to an application that was part of the USB Drive (not pen drive) drivers. When i put the key in and this program was running, the pc locked up. I stopped this program from starting at bootup (through START - RUN - MSCONFIG - Startup Tab) and didn't have the problem again.
Hope this helps.

If only it was that simple, I have even tried using USB devices without IRQ's but it still hangs after about 8 seconds of use, my USB HDD however works fine

It turned out to be the Creative Labs CD with "updated" apps and drivers on it !

By downloading even newer drivers from their site I managed to solve the problem.
